Urban Landscapes is a new curriculum in the Department of Architecture and Urban Design Master’s studies, focused on issues of urban space and landscape. The objective is to enhance the qualities of urban environment by particular project solutions that take into consideration the general spatial issues as well as the character of the landscape. The strength of landscape studies is the ability to combine the knowledge of wider ecosystem with that of human environment and capability of bringing different urban elements together into a working environment. To achieve the aim it is important to understand the contemporary urban conglomerates as dynamic ecosystems by studying the processes of growth, shrinkage, density, synthesis, integration etc.

The curriculum prepares students for working either independently or with a group on visions and projects of urban space concentrating on the discourse of landscape. Students of neighboring disciplines may take landscape-specific courses as optional subjects.

The curriculum comprises of practical and theoretical assignments, interdisciplinary and general subjects. Studies are performed in close co-operation with departments of architecture and urban studies. The studies will be carried out both in English and Estonian languages. The nominal time for the curriculum is 2 years, 60 CP each.

Basic study comprises of subjects in arts and art history and elective subjects. Basic study broadens the mind of the student and creates premises for interdisciplinary research.

Theoretical specialty subjects consists of lectures and seminars in urban studies and landscape architecture. Practical specialty subjects gives thorough knowledge and skills in working methods. The aim is to relate theoretical basis to practical tasks and achieve creative problem-solving.

Master’s thesis 30CP summarizes acquired knowledge and skills by using them creatively in individual research. Total 120CP.
