What are the application deadlines?

Apply by March 4, 2024 to begin your studies in the autumn of 2024.

What documents do I need to complete my application?

You will need to submit a CV, a sample of your previous work, a motivation letter, an undergraduate diploma, transcript of records, a certificate of English language proficiency, and a copy of your passport/ID card. And you need to pay the application fee. Please see the admission requirements for further details. 

I don’t have a background in urban studies. Can I still apply?

Yes, absolutely. Your background should be in a discipline that’s broadly related to urban studies, such as architecture, urbanism, urban planning, geography, sociology, political sciences, art history, etc.

Can I apply if I will receive my diploma after the application deadline?

Yes you can! You will need to send your undergraduate diploma to us by June 30, 2024, before the start of the academic year 2024/25.

What is the minimum required level of English?

The candidates need to provide an English-language certificate. The minimum requirements are as follows:

– TOEFL ITP: 543,

– TOEFL iBT: 72

– IELTS (academic or indicator): min 5,5 in all parts of the test (IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) needs to be sent directly from the test centre to the receiving institution),

– FCE (Cambridge First Certificate in English): minimum required result is 160 for the B2 exam

– CAE (Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English) – C1 level

– CPE (Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English) – C2 level

– Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): 59.

– Estonian state exam in English – minimum required result is B2 level (for exams taken in 1997-2013 66 points or higher)

 

English language tests are offered by the Estonian Academy of Arts. Minimum B2 level is required. The test will take place on 06.03.2024 in Estonian Academy of Arts, Tallinn. Registration is required by sending your contact info (full name, email, phone number) to vastuvott@artun.ee. NB! Only applicants who have submitted their application in SAIS can register for the test.

How do I apply?

How are applications evaluated?

During the two-stage admission process, we will review your application documents, and invite shortlisted candidates for an interview (by Zoom). Your application should demonstrate intellectual curiosity, an imaginative grasp of the urban question, a strong academic record, and a clear idea how your education and experience have prepared you for the program. It will display that you can have a good command of English language, think independently and work collaboratively, and pursue studies across urban theory and design.

When will application decisions be communicated?

The application has two rounds. Shortlisted candidates will be notified in March, 2024. Interviews will be held on March 20, 2024. The results will be communicated by March 28, 2024.

What kind of degree will I receive when I complete the program?

You will receive a Master’s Degree in Urban Studies.

How long is the program?

It is a 2-year program that consists of 120 ECTS.

What’s the tuition fee?

The tuition fee is 950 EUR/semester for both EU and non-EU candidates.

The tuition fee does not include the costs of student housing, food, visas and other expenses related to daily life in Tallinn. The fee does not fully cover the costs of study trips abroad.

When do classes begin and end?

The autumn semester begins in the last week of August and ends in the third week of December, followed by an exam period in January. The second semester starts in the last week of January and ends in the last week of May.
