Ene-Liis Semper and Anita Kremm in Helsinki’s Pasila Black-Box

In Helsinki, Ene-Liis Semper’s (professor of EKA Scenography) project “Untitled” premiered with the theater graduates of the Theater Academy there in the Pasila black-box theater of the local City Theater Kaupunginteatteri.

It is an original play, which, according to Enel-Liis Semper, is to some extent a sequel to the play “72 days”. The similarity is that images were used and the material does not contain verbal dialogue.

EKA scenography students Anita Kremm and Liisamari Viik were assisting the director.

Ene-Liis’ long time collaborator Jakob Juhkam is the composer.

The performance “Untitled” lasts about 1 and 3/4 hours, which, according to the author, guarantees the return from Helsinki to Tallinn on the last ferry.

The play will not be played for long, because “Untitled” is a graduation play.

More information

Author’s text:

Over the course of the years, I have discovered I am mostly drawn to things that, for some reason, refuse to be given a name. These things are interesting to me because they refuse to be fully described or are too special or abstract or obvious to be captured by words. As an artist, I aim to bring these unnamed moments to the stage as they are, without any explanation, so that people can experience them as I did. I am curious to see if and how others will receive and interpret these moments.

To me, the performance composition needs to escape linearity and the feeling of a natural flow of time. That´s why I collect the material working from photography, paintings and frozen poses, and then I assemble them together in different weird ways, that somehow despite being strange, remind me of life in its rawness. These unnamed moments I create are a reminder for me of our actual condition as human beings. I as a subject exist among infinite stories that happen simultaneously in the present moment. Beyond my subjective limited perspectives, and my constant effort to reduce life to something I can hope to make sense of, all moments of existence manifest themselves in extremely weird, absurd deeply touching shapes.

The reality I seek is often overwhelming and incomprehensible, yet provokes in me (and hopefully in the audience) an unconditional empathy that can transport me to a meditative state where reality and its impressions somehow become available.

Riin Maide in Tallinn Art Hall Gallery

On Thursday, April 27, exhibition “On the other side, from other things” by Riin Maide will open in Tallinn Art Hall Gallery. Exhibited installations focus on the potential of absent spaces and the temporary beauty.

“On other sides and other things” is a visual exploration of places that don’t actually exist. Using materials such as paper and fabric, for four days Maide creates (and recreates) an environment through which spatial footnotes can be experienced.

“With every good spectacle, I have almost always been more fascinated by what lies behind it. The romantic in me finds the nostalgia and sad beauty of abandonment in empty storefronts, despite the cruelty of capitalism. A disappearing moment that I would like to capture.”

Riin Maide (1997) is an artist and scenographer who lives and works in Tallinn. In her practice, she deals with memory and presence through playful installations and staged environments. Her work can be often characterised as site-specific, ephemeral and reliant on graphic imagery. In addition to exhibitions, she also works as a curator, performer. She has also participated as stage designer in several performances, both in Estonia and abroad. Maide graduated in 2020 with a degree in graphics at the Estonian Academy of Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts (BA) and is currently studying scenography (MA). In addition, she has studied at the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theater at DAMU in Prague. Riin has received the Edmund Valtman and the Eduard Wiiralt scholarships, as well as the EKA Young Artist Award in 2020 and the title of Newcomer in Graphics in 2022.

Estookin “Simulacrum”

The opening of Estookin’s solo show SIMULACRUM will take place at Telliskivi Creative City’s Outdoor Gallery on Saturday 7 May at 17:00.

The exhibition features portraits of ten popular Estonian musicians: Ivo Linna, Ott Lepland, Laura Pōldvere, Kerli, Leslie Da Bass, Maarja Nuut, Genka, Anna Kaneelina, Rita Ray, Tanel Padar and ten abstractions inspired by their music, all on large one and a half metre canvases. The exhibits are the results of a quest to explore the effects of music on the works of a visual artist.

The opening show of the exhibition will be performed by Laura Põldvere and Uku Kübar.

The opening show will be followed by a conversation between Estookin and Rita Ray about the processes of creating music and art. The conversation is moderated by Henrik Ehte.

The exhibit is open around the clock from 7 May until 7 June 2022.

Curated by: Estookin

Designed by: Estookin

Special thanks to: Ene-Liis Semper, Katrin Reimann, Janno Reimann, Anita Kremm, Kristel Zimmer, Alice Aleksandridi, Andres Ojasu, Reene Teder, Henrik Ehte, Magdaleena Maasik, and the Creative City’s Outdoor Gallery.

The paintings were created as part of an experiment, where Estookin would exclusively listen to the music of the pictured artist during the entire painting process. Drawing inspiration from the music, she created staged portraits that enter into an intimate dialogue with the abstract landscapes that present the artist’s vision of each musician and their music.

“I love keeping an eye on what other artists are putting out into the world and sharing aesthetic elements that drive me to express my artistic views in a more distinct and personal manner. The exhibits are not made-to-order vinyl designs that draw on a conversation between the artist and musician, and aim to represent the musician’s image as closely as possible. I chose these musicians intentionally and allowed my senses to guide the process of artistic interpretation. These reproductions of the paintings created during my experiment form an independent reality that has lost connection with its origins – in other words, a simulacrum*,” explains Estookin.

Estookin (b. 1997, Tallinn), who began exploring digital painting in 2012, is an illustrator, and visual and digital artist active in Estonia and abroad. Over the past few years, Estookin has taken part in various creative projects that, in addition to allowing her to create, learn and polish her technical skills, have brought her close to the music industry. Music and sound have always been of integral importance to Estookin’s artistic output. As an outstanding album cover designer, she has created visual identities for musicians such as Bella Poarch, nublu, Wateva and Lexsoul Dancemachine. In addition to music, Estookin draws inspiration from fashion, theatre, architecture, technology and electropunk. Aside from digital art, Estookin finds expression in photography, and video and theatre arts.

SIMULACRUM is part of Estookin’s bachelor’s project for her degree in scenography at the Estonian Academy of Arts. The project is supervised by Ene-Liis Semper.

* According to Jean Baudrillard, a simulacrum replaces the real. In Simulacra and Simulation he writes, “Simulation is no longer that of a territory, a referential being or a substance. It is the generation by models of a real without origin or reality: a hyperreal. […] It is no longer a question of imitation, nor of reduplication, nor even of parody.” The simulation no longer reflects reality but creates a new and independent reality – a visual representation of sound.

“…on ühest ennenägematust ja ennekuulmatust seiklusest, mis juhtus siis, kui Jumal taganes oma kohalt ja don Quijote astus välja oma majast ning ei suutnud maailma enam ära tunda, ja teistest suurepärastest juhtumistest, mis väärivad mängimist ja mis juhtusid rõhujaid rõhututest lahutaval teel, mis võib-olla lõppeb seal, kus algab halastus.”

Flash Exhibition “On the Other Side” 4 in Narva Incubator Object

The weekly EKA International Workshop for Art Students in Narva ends with a flash exhibition “On the Other Side” by young artists from France, Lithuania, Finland and Estonia.
The exhibition can be viewed at the Narva Incubator at Linda 2 on Friday, March 4 from 6 pm to 11 pm. The master class was conducted by professors Ene-Liis Semper and Patrick Laffont de Lojo.

The city of Narva, located on the Russian-EU border, suffered greatly in the hostilities of the Second World War, and from there Narva’s identity is based on the knowledge that there is an invisible, lost city behind, under and inside the visible city. The border identity of the city has been associated for centuries with a meeting of different cultures and stories from the past, which can be read from the urban space. Some stories are hidden inside the buildings, some echo us on the other side of the river, from Ivangorod.

Narva is a friendly and open city – come and see what it looks like over here!

The master class in Narva took place within the framework of the international project ERASMUS (BIP). The master class was organized by the Visual Thought Laboratory of EKA in cooperation with the EnsAD (École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs) in Paris, the University of Helsinki Uniarts and the Dailes Academy in Vilnius.

The last train back to Tallinn will leave on March 4 at 8.27 pm.

Many thanks for the help: Narva Vaba Lava, OÜ Linda Kaks, OÜ Narva Gate, Innovation and Creative Center Objekt, Allan Kaldoya and Jaanus Mick.
