“Corpora” at EKA Gallery 19.04.–5.05.2018

Siiri Jüris and Triin Marts are showing their new exhibition, “Corpora” in EKA Galerii from 19 April to 5 May, 2018.

“Corpora” focuses on material and its multiplicity, the insubordination of the living and organic. Corporeality, and the presence of material announces itself and requires attention. It refuses to stay in the realm of unconsciousness or secondary to thought. Nor does it want to conform to different classifications, distinctions or rapid solutions that promise control, refresh, improve or reprogram.

Siiri Jüris is an artist based in Tartu. She is a graduate of the Tartu Art School in the decorator-stylist speciality (2012) and received a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the University of Tartu painting department (2015 and 2017, respectively). Starting from her BA, Jüris has often come back to portrait painting, taking an interest in the possibilities of depicting the individual and the human conditions, consistently questioning conventions and traditions in the painting genre. Jüris’ paintings can be found in many private collections.

Triin Marts is a graduate of the Viljandi Culture Academy in the field of dance art (2011). She then received a BA from the University of Tartu painting department (2015). She is currently in her last year of studies in the painting master’s degree programme at the Estonian Academy of Arts. In parallel to her studies, she also serves as a dance instructor and freelance dance artist. In her work, she takes an interest in movement, the body’s materiality and cultural networks of semantic creation.
