Jaanus Samma, Helena Schlichting, Nestori Syrjälä: Pebbles in the Mouth

18.12.2013–24.1.2014

Artist talks / Exhibition opening / Party on Tuesday 17 December at 5–8 pm

Demosthenes, statesman and orator of ancient Athens, considered delivery (hypokrisis) as the most important aspect of rhetoric. According to a legend, he practiced public speaking by putting small stones in his mouth and climbing steep hills while reciting his speeches.

Delivery, the way in which speech comes to exist for others, is physical. Or, the physical is a form of delivery. Paper is a delivery, .mov is a delivery, a cardigan is a delivery. They are not merely mediums, they have their own physicality. The zones of objects cross each other in an ‘interobjective configuration space’. Enmeshing into one another, things deliver other things. They appear to be articulating the tension between inside and outside, attempting to speak about the circulation between what seems to be intimate and what public.*

Artists Jaanus Samma (Tallinn), Helena Schlichting (Frankfurt), and Nestori Syrjälä (Helsinki) came together while on residency at HIAP, and are now presenting their new works realised during this time at Gallery Augusta. On the opening of the exhibition, the artists will speak about their artistic processes and practices.

The exhibition is curated by Jenni Nurmenniemi.
