The East , a database documentary

“The East” is a database documentary, which we are presenting here in an
installation version.
The film shows the contrasts of Estonia: the industrial landscape of North-East
Estonia, picturesque nature, grim and beautiful indtustrial landscapes and the
stories of the people living there.
Our artistic vision has been to emphasise the visual point of view and to add
critical commentaries. Our main interest lies in the experimental and
innovative format, which allows us to show hidden and unexplored areas of the
topic.
The characters and locations portrayed in the film are real. We see people whose
lives are shaped by their work in the energy and oil shale companies, and whose
families are of mixed nationalities. We see the reality of people’s lives and
understand their everyday routine.
From the point of view of form, the film has two variations: linear and
interactive. The interactive format has four versions: cinematic, installative,
DVD-version and web-version. There have also been experiments with a multiuser
cinematic version, but for this exhibition we are presenting an installation
designed for a single user.
The audience can influence the duration of the film. There are four topics to
explore and to make choices: nature, industrial environment, machines, and
people. The aesthetics of the film are built on the multiscreen principle which
allows choices to be made between the active narrative and the narrative in
waiting.

The Finno-Ugric expeditions, a tradition established in 1978 by Kaljo Põllu, professor of the Academy of Arts, have been organized for several decades. Every summer, the students embark on a journey to one of the Finno-Ugric peoples and stay there for nearly a month. In the summer of 2013, the art students were conducting anthropological fieldwork in Narva, Narva-Jõesuu, Kudruküla, Ivangorod and Vanaküla. The goal was to study the borders of Narva – physical, mental as well as metaphorical – and see how the locals sense them.
The question of borders is always relevant – while separating one space from another, the border is also the junction and common ground of those spaces. A state border is more than just a signed contract – it is also something you can experience physically. This physical aspect of the border is, in fact, the focal point of the whole exhibition inspired by the humorous stories collected during the fieldwork period. How does the border smell? How does the border taste? Can you bite through the border? Is the border wearing panties?
The following people took part in the fieldwork: Kalle Keskrand, Hendrik-Julius Kits, Mihkel Reha, Eva Sepping, Ave Taavet, Madis Tuuder, and Marika Alver as the supervisor.
The expedition was funded by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia and the Estonian Students Fund in USA.

The exhibition will be open until the end of January 2015.
