About the Programme

SCENOGRAPHY AS A PROFESSION
Scenography is a speciality that offers a unique opportunity to work with the visual aspects of theatre and film. The Estonian Academy of Arts is the only Estonian educational institution where scenography is taught. The curriculum has been designed with the best traditions and concepts in mind.

NATURE OF THE DEPARTMENT
Scenography is part of the Faculty of Fine Arts and as such, an integrated part of the wider visual art field. The course is based on a belief that a scenographer is the author of an integrated artistic vision; in both traditional theatre and in a post-dramatic theatre scene, the scenographer is responsible for the visual experience of the spectator.

WHAT ARE THE STUDIES LIKE?
In the Department of Scenography, the students are led from simpler to more complicated assignments based on the integrated structure of the curriculum.
• Multi- and interdisciplinary nature of the studies.
• Practical training next to the industry.
• Collaboration with theatre and film schools.

SCENOGRAPHY AT THE ACADEMY OF ARTS
Although this speciality has existed in the format of theatre design since the last century, scenography, in its present form, has become, in many ways, a totally new discipline. It has abandoned simple decoration, and has moved towards a conceptual content that is at the same time multi-, inter- and trans-disciplinary. The old techniques and technologies are still taught along with the contemporary solutions based on digital technologies.
