UI/UX Design


This course is designed for beginners who want to learn modern design technologies to create digital products and services that meet user needs. It’s a great opportunity to try out Figma software and get familiar with the daily tasks of a UI/UX designer in an IT company.

In 2025, UI/UX design will be one of the most in-demand professions in the IT and design industries. Design has the power to improve the world, and UI/UX designers contribute to this daily by enhancing user experiences and creating more convenient, modern, and aesthetically appealing solutions. This course provides fundamental knowledge of UI/UX design.

Note! The course will be conducted in English.

Participant Requirements

  • Secondary education and proficiency in English
  • Basic computer skills

Course Outline

Each session includes both UI/UX theory and Figma practice.

Day 1: Introduction to Mobile UI/UX Design

Theory: What is UX, and what is UI? Who works on it? Design thinking. Mobile vs. web platforms. Overview of the design process and Figma software.
Figma: Introduction to the interface and tools. Figma containers: sections, groups, and frames. Starting our mobile app design.

Day 2: Fundamentals of Mobile UI Design

Theory: User journey. User interviews. Target audience and personas. Sketching and wireframing. Technical requirements for mobile platforms.
Figma: Comments and file sharing in Figma. Layout grid. Basic shapes, text, and image manipulation. Adding main screens (wireframes) to our app. Exploring the Figma community.

Day 3: Mobile UI Design Principles

Theory: Understanding user behavior. Colors, typography, and visual hierarchy. Accessibility in design. The IT team and the app development process.
Figma: Auto layout. Core UI elements: inputs, forms, and buttons. Adding UI elements to our app.

Day 4: Mobile Prototyping and Testing

Theory: Prototype requirements. How to hand off files to developers. Types of mobile app testing. Analyzing test results.
Figma: Reusable components. Interactive prototype. Creating screen-to-screen interactions.

Day 5: Summary & Professional Opportunities in UI/UX Design

Theory: Bringing everything together. How to present your work. The role of AI in UI/UX. UI/UX job opportunities. Job interviews, portfolios, and the skills companies expect. Useful UI/UX resources. Improving UI/UX skills.
Figma: Working with design systems and UI kits.

Course Outcomes

By completing the course, participants will:

  • Understand the role and tasks of a UI/UX designer.
  • Be familiar with mobile app development processes.
  • Learn Figma basics for creating digital sketches and prototypes.
  • Enhance their portfolio with a UI/UX project.

Assessment

The course concludes with an evaluation. Participants must attend at least 75% of the sessions to receive credit. A certificate from the Estonian Academy of Arts will be issued upon completion of a written feedback form.

Instructor

Andrei Kedrin holds a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from the Estonian Academy of Arts (2006). He has extensive experience in digital product design and also works with illustrations and street art. Andrei teaches courses at Kumu and has an interest in new forms of digital art.

Duration: 15 academic hours of in-person instruction + 11 hours of independent work (1 ECTS credit)
