Doktoritöö käsitleb Eesti 20. sajandi arhitektuuri “ajaloostamist” nõukogudeaegses arhitektuurihistoriograafias. Mõiste “kriitiline historiograafia” taha koondunud ideestiku toel uuritakse töös ajalootekste tõlgendustele avatud territooriumina ning käsitletakse ajalooga kriitilist suhestumist mitteakadeemilistes praktikates, näiteks kunstis. Keskendudes kahe peamise nõukogude perioodil moodsast arhitektuurist kirjutanud autori – Leo Gensi ja Leonhard Lapini – arhitektuuriajaloolistele kirjutistele jälgitakse, kuidas ja millena modernsus end nende kahe viljaka, ent väga erineva kirjutaja tekstides avab. Kunstiteadlase Gensi akadeemilised artiklid ning kunstnik ja arhitekt Lapini arvukaid seoseid loovad tekstid näitavad, et Eesti nõukogudeaegsel arhitektuurihistoriograafial olid ideoloogiliselt piiritletud tähendusruumi kõrval hoopis mitmekesisemad ideelised allikad ja laiemad seosed Lääne kultuurilise modernsusega.
The doctoral dissertation studies the historicization of modern architecture in Estonia during the Soviet period. Taking the ideas of “critical historiography” as a platform the dissertation explores the (critical) interest in history and the uses of history in non-academic practices, for example in art, but also considers the writing of history to be not solely as an ideological project but a territory opened to interpretation. Focusing on the two prolific but at the same time very different authors – Leo Gens and Leonhard Lapin – the aim of the study is to follow how modernity is unfolded and narrated in the historiography of modern architecture in the 1960s-1980s. The articles by Gens who was an academically trained art historian and Lapin, an artist and an architect, whose texts suggest myriads of ideas and connections, show that Soviet-era architectural historiography drew on much more multifaceted sources for ideas and thus had a broader connection to the Western cultural modernity than one might imagine to be in a narrowly delimited ideological space.
