What is RPL / VÕTA (Recognition of Prior Learning)?
What is RPL / VÕTA (Recognition of Prior Learning)?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows you to have your previous studies or experience recognised as part of your studies at EKA.
RPL is based on assessing whether your prior learning matches the learning outcomes of a course or programme.
Important: It is not your experience that is assessed, but what you have learned from it.
Is RPL for you?
RPL may be suitable if you:
– have completed relevant studies elsewhere, or
– have gained knowledge and skills through work or other experience
RPL may not be suitable if your experience is not directly related to your studies.
Two types of RPL
There are two types of RPL applications, depending on how your prior learning was acquired.
Recognition of prior studies
– based on completed courses at another institution
– requires a transcript of records and course descriptions
– assessment is based on comparing course content and learning outcomes
Recognition of prior experience
– based on work experience or other non-formal and informal learning
– requires you to describe your role, responsibilities and activities
– requires a short self-analysis explaining what you have learned and how it relates to the learning outcomes
– requires evidence of your experience (e.g. employment confirmation, portfolio, work samples or certificates)
How does it work?
1. You review your options and identify relevant courses
2. You submit an RPL application for a specific semester
3. Your application is assessed by the RPL committee.
4. You receive a decision
One application may include multiple courses and different types of prior learning. Each part is assessed separately based on the learning outcomes.
