Grading System

At the Estonian Academy of Arts, both differentiated and non-differentiated assessment is used, in accordance with the Estonian national higher education grading system and the EKA Study Regulations.

A subject is considered completed after the assessment of the achievement of the learning outcomes, provided that it is passed with a positive result.

Differentiated assessment (letter grades)

Positive grades on the differentiated assessment scale

A – Excellent
An outstanding, in-depth and high-quality result.
In art subjects, the work result is particularly strong and well developed; in theory subjects, knowledge is thorough. Learning outcomes are applied confidently and creatively, supported by independent work and relevant sources.

B – Very good
A very good result that meets the requirements and volume specified in the subject card.
Learning outcomes are applied very well. Minor, non-essential inaccuracies may occur.

C – Good
A good result that meets the requirements of the subject card.
Learning outcomes are generally applied well, although some uncertainty or imprecision may appear in more detailed, creative or technical aspects.

D – Satisfactory
A sufficient result that allows continuation of studies.
The main learning outcomes have been achieved, but there may be noticeable deficiencies or uncertainties, especially in creative, technical or non-standard situations.

E – Poor
The minimum required learning outcomes have been achieved.
However, serious deficiencies in application remain, which may hinder further studies based on this subject.

Negative grades on the differentiated assessment scale

F – Insufficient
The minimum level of knowledge, creative ability or technical skills required by the curriculum has not been achieved.

MI – Not participated
The student did not participate in the assessment.

Non-differentiated assessment (pass/fail)

Positive grade on the non-differentiated assessment scale

Pass (P)
The student has acquired the knowledge, skills and competences in the volume specified in the subject card.

Negative grades on the non-differentiated assessment scale

Fail (MA)
The student has not acquired the knowledge, skills and competences in the volume specified in the subject card.

Not participated (MI)
The student did not participate in the assessment.

Weighted average grade

At the Estonian Academy of Arts, student performance is evaluated using a weighted average grade.

For the purpose of calculating the weighted average grade, letter grades correspond to the following numerical values:

A = 5
B = 4
C = 3
D = 2
E = 1
F = 0

Courses assessed on a pass/fail basis (P / MA / MI) are not included in the calculation of the weighted average grade, but they award ECTS credits for programme completion.

The weighted average grade is calculated as the sum of the products of grades and corresponding ECTS credits, divided by the total number of ECTS credits obtained from graded courses.
