BA programme
The BA programme gives the necessary professional knowledge of the history of art, visual culture, design and architecture. These topics are supplemented by general history, philosophy, aesthetics, culture theory and foreign languages. Speciality subjects introduce the specific issues of art history and art institutions, and they teach students to analyse works of art and architecture. The Institute of Art History and Visual Culture’s BA programme is based on an individual approach and multifaceted support provided for the student. Alongside lectures and seminars, art-related field-trips are organised as practicums in Estonia and abroad; a museum internship will give a better understanding of the everyday work of art historians. The programme will end with a bachelor’s thesis that handles a chosen topic in depth.
The head of the Institute of Art History and Visual Culture BA programme is Liisa-Helena Lumberg.
Study trips
Institute of Art History and Visual Culture bachelor’s degree students take two practical training trips each spring – one in Estonia, the other to a different country. During the practical training, students gain in-depth knowledge about the art and architectural history of a particular region or city. Students take part in preparing a travel guide and deliver presentations regarding the sites visited. In the master’s degree programme, study trips take a more specialized focus, visiting major exhibitions and events, museums and other art institutions in other countries.
