The Department of Architecture and Urban Design of the Estonian Academy of Arts is the central institution of architectural education in Estonia.
The study programme of architecture and urban design is an exceptional 5-year integrated Master’s programme which will be completed with a successful defending of a Master’s thesis after which the student will receive a vocational Master’s degree in architecture. The study period of 5 years corresponds to the EU’s recommendation for architectural studies. Architectural education in Europe is provided either by academic institutions or technical universities. On the basis of such division, the study programme of the Department of Architecture belongs in the former category – in addition to specialty subjects a wide choice of subjects in the fields of philosophy, engineering, art, social studies and ecology is offered. An integral part of the architectural programme is the discipline of urban planning. Thus the Department of Architecture educates architects with broad knowledge and skills who are capable of working in any field related to architecture.
Although the 5-year programme is an integrated programme in form, its content could be divided into a 3-year basic programme and a 2-year Master’s programme. In the fourth year the programme will include theoretical and practical urban planning projects. The fifth year will be finished with a Master’s thesis of 20 credits. It has become customary that the topic and field of the project for the Master’s thesis is recommended by the department.
International students as well as students from other Estonian universities are usually accepted to the Department of Architecture and Urban Design as exchange students. The graduates of the architectural programme at Tallinn Technical University can receive a vocational Master’s degree in architecture by completing a 2-year course at the Academy. After receiving the vocational Master’s degree and doing professional work for a period of three years the alumni of the Department of Architecture and Urban Design may apply for professional license at the Ministry of the Environment.
