Zach Blas will be a visiting professor at EKA from April 27 to May 6, where he will lead seminars and workshops for the Faculty of Fine Arts and the doctoral school. Zach Blas (b. 1981) is an artist, writer, and filmmaker whose practice contends with computational technologies, their industries, and the powers that constitute and animate them.
Blas’s visit to EKA takes place within the Transform4Europe (T4EU) alliance, which supports international collaboration and academic mobility. In collaboration with Vytautas Magnus University, his residency is split between the two T4EU partner institutions, with approximately two weeks in Tallinn and two weeks in Kaunas.
Blas has participated in major international exhibitions, including the Whitney Biennial in New York, the Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, and the Gwangju Biennale. His solo exhibitions have been presented at institutions such as Vienna Secession (2024) and Van Abbemuseum (2020), as well as in Madrid and London. Alongside his exhibition practice, Blas is active in publishing and writing; his recent works include the artist books Ass of God: Collected Heretical Writings of Salb Hacz (2024) and Unknown Ideals (2021), and, with Melody Jue and Jennifer Rhee, the co-edited volume Informatics of Domination (2025).
Since 2021, Blas has been Assistant Professor of Visual Studies in the Daniels Faculty at the University of Toronto. He previously taught in the Department of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London and holds a PhD from the Duke University Graduate Program in Literature and an MFA in Media Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles.
