Walter Van Beirendonck from Antwerp Six in EKA

On August 22, a special event took place at the Estonian Academy of Arts. Belgian fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck gave an exclusive lecture to fashion, textile, and accessory design students.

Van Beirendonck is one of the most influential figures in contemporary fashion and a member of the legendary Antwerp Six, the group of designers that brought international attention to Belgian fashion in the 1980s.

He graduated from the Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1980 and has been creating collections since 1983, characterized by bold graphics, vibrant colors, and ethnic inspirations. His work extends beyond fashion into music and the arts – most notably designing costumes for U2’s PopMart Tour. As an educator, Van Beirendonck taught at his alma mater for nearly four decades, serving as head of the fashion department from 2007 to 2022.

His work has always been more than fashion – often provocative rather than modest, combining political and social commentary with absurdity and humor.

The lecture offered students a rare opportunity to hear directly from the designer how bold use of color, playful forms, and sharp metaphors can transform the language and meaning of contemporary fashion.
