International Researchers Join EKA for RETEX Project on Sustainable Smart Textiles

This summer, the Estonian Academy of Arts welcomes its first visiting researchers from Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania, and Istanbul Technical University, Turkey, as part of the RETEX MSCA SE project—an international research initiative focused on developing sustainable electronic textile materials. The project aims to replace conventional textiles with environmentally friendly alternatives, such as regenerated fibres from cotton fabrics, through collaboration between experts in materials science, chemistry, environmental studies, and design. Visiting researchers from the University Politehnica of Bucharest, doctoral student Andrei Danielescu and lecturer Ioan-Alexandru Bratosin, together with researcher/ doctoral student Nurşah Çağlar and doctoral student Mehmet Oğuz Mutlu from Istanbul Technical University, will be working with EKA’s local team. The local team is led by Kristi Kuusk (PhD) and includes Dila Demir (PhD), Professor Piret Puppart, and MA student Joanne-Heleene Sõrmus. The team will be working on the development of a smart textile prototype to support posture. The international researchers will be based at EKA until the end of September, marking the beginning of hands-on design activities within the project. RETEX is coordinated by Associate Professor Özgür Atalay (PhD) from Istanbul Technical University and aims to foster international knowledge exchange, cross-sectoral innovation, and sustainable solutions in the field of electronic textiles.
