EKA professor and architect Toomas Tammis: “Architecture is about taking into account space and the world and accepting change”

Architecture is not just about creating houses and buildings, but about shaping our entire lives and shaping our living environment. EKA professor of architecture and urban design and architect Toomas Tammis shared how architecture is a constant dialogue with the world, taking into account changes and time, and people’s needs.

If you are interested in how to create spaces where people feel good and that adapt to changes in the world, you can submit an application to EKA’s architecture studies before June 19, 2025.

Architecture is the art of living

According to Tammis, architecture is not just about building houses, but about making life better. “We must be able to create spaces that people enjoy – it is part of the spatial and material experience. An architect has the ability to provide an additional emotional quality that makes our everyday life more meaningful,” he said.

Thinking ahead

The architecture studies at the Estonian Academy of Arts pay attention to how architecture is constantly changing over time. “Architecture is not a fumbling in the past – life is constantly evolving, we constantly need different spatial solutions that support our lives,” Tammis noted.

Architects are really needed

In the architecture profession, you learn how to understand and analyze changes in the world and create architecture that responds to these changes. “Architects are really needed. We all need a physical and material environment that is much more than just standing upright and staying warm. It is a system and structure that frames the entire culture,” Tammis said, adding that it is worth working on ensuring that people recognize themselves in the system, space or material.
