Within the framework of the course “Inclusive Space for All”, a partner institution is involved every year, with which some small or large spatial issue will be jointly solved. In 2023, the department’s partner was Tallinn University and students from Tallinn University . The course was supervised by Larissa Jõgi (TÜ), Kristi Klaasmägi (TÜ), Polina Tšerkassova (TÜ), Liisa Põime (EKA) and Mariann Drell (EKA).

In Tallinn University buildings, areas that should provide students with opportunities for individual study, cooperation, spending time and communication have remained unsolved. Fragmented buildings, connected as if by bridges and filled with vertical and horizontal movement paths, have outgrown multifunctionality.

During the studio, students from EKA and Tallinn University of Technology divided into interdisciplinary groups. The spatial focus was on the empty areas of the Tallinn University Terra building, which currently stand vacant, but in the future are planned to be a place for students to collaborate, work alone and spend time together.

But how can we reclaim the spaces in such a way that we understand the need for their use and are able to create a valuable environment in densely packed buildings? When reclaiming the areas intended for Tallinn University students, attention was paid to the spatial program, the physical environment and the potential of each area. But how should the reclaiming be carried out – through research, guerrilla-style space filling, or using an application?

Each group solved the collection of source data based on its project – through written communication with a notebook in the corner of the room, as a site observation, as an analysis of existing data.
