BEFORE / AFTER: Converting Typologies
Master Studio 2 2023/2024 for the 1st year MA Interior Architecture was supervised by Pavle Stamenovic.
BEFORE / AFTER: Converting Typologies
learning about the past | understanding the present | anticipating the future
The pace of contemporary life inevitably raises the question of duration in the context of spatial design practices. The physical object of architecture presumably lasts longer than to meet the current needs of those for whom it was intended. We could argue that the conventional understanding of a building as a typologically determined artefact with an imposed function implies the divergence between architectural project and the life of the building. Lifespan of the architectural space inevitably exceeds the intent (visions), purpose (needs) and function (technologies) of those for whom it was created, therefore making presumed program compromised and obsolete.
Topic of the studio is focused on the contemporary aspects of everyday life with the intention to tangle and investigate the changes that are emerging in the context of living spaces.
BEFORE/AFTER: Converting Typologies course focused on the creative and transformative process of domesticating interior spaces in typologically determined architectural objects in relation with the Zeitgeist. Students were invited to explore the principles of interior architecture to reimagine and repurpose obsolete spaces into habitable, functional, and contemporary environments. By emphasizing on the proposed methodological tools such as tracing the existing, storytelling, designing relations, and shaping the space, this course aimed to empower students with the skills and knowledge to reconceptualize obsolete architectures through creating sustainable scenarios for everyday life.
The course was conceived as a tripartite composition consisting of
- The BEFORE – learning about the pasta
- ZEITGEIST – understanding the present during a study trip to Belgrade
- The AFTER – anticipating the future, students’ participation in SISU 2024 Time capsule project
