The Development direction of the 2024 spring semester master’s studio focused on sitting, at the decision of supervisor Jüri Kermik.
The project focuses on the seat and the act of sitting by considering related aspects such as location, typology, purposes, opportunities rising from materials and the choice of execution as a basis for a design narrative. Narrative, in the context of this project, becomes a tool of description to make its development visible (readable).
As a point of departure, we consider and examine materials, details and the types of construction, which allow us to commence a journey to an idea and ultimately towards the finished object. In addition to these real and “touchable” things, which could purposefully manipulated, machined and formed (by sawing, drilling, joining and dividing, multiplying, etc), there are also “untouchable” things such as memory (of the place), signs and meanings, which could be picked up to become part of the design narrative.
