Marta Elisabeth Tikman, who graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts in Architecture and Urban Design this spring, received recognition for her master’s thesis “Advanced Vernacular: Applying Historical Techniques in Contemporary Architecture” at the Estonian Construction Entrepreneurs’ Association’s renovation thesis competition.
The importance of the topic lies in the fact that it shows how ecological thinking and principles learned from the past offer alternative options for creating a passive, yet high-quality living environment, using the example of a 19th-century industrial Mayer quarter in Tallinn.
