On August 17th, the main exhibition of the TASE ‘20 festival was opened at the gallery of the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn.  The first TASE online exhibition, which has gained a lot of interest, remains open, but now a rich and multifaceted exhibition program of bachelor’s and master’s theses is being shown in several galleries around town. The main exhibition features works that are place-, sound- and room-centered and invite the audience to participate in person on the spot.

Annually, the Alma Mater of Estonian contemporary architecture, design and art brings to life not only new-generation creators of culture, but also current ideas and a momentary meaningful response to life itself.

Annika Kiidron, fashion design graduate, states that her “work is always painfully honest, visual and as sustainable as possible. Like a deep pop fairy tale or reusable folklore of the future. Time traveller camouflage.”

Through personal and universal experience weighing the image of Eastern European women, Marta Vaarik, a Master of Fine Arts, says in the words of Viivi Luik: “I believe that our world needs courage, love and commitment the most. I have opened the inside of my heart with the work  “i rather be object” and I use utmost honesty to create empathy in the viewer.”

The keywords of TASE in recent years have been recovery and sustainability, transparency of societies, technology and cultural dialogue. However, a new way of living caused by the State of Emergency has prompted young artists to create art about this era of change. They had to rethink the sphere of influence of art and try to make ideas work in the virtual world – in a new reality. The basics of design were questioned, and the needs of living and working spaces were architecturally reinterpreted. In his research on forging technology, Sander Haugas, a Master of Jewellery and Blacksmithing, states: “/… It is important to pay attention to the acquisition of professional traditional craft skills and their fusion with modern technologies. The introduction of digital technologies is currently favouring the re-application of artisan methods in modern architecture. “

In this screen-centric world, graduates have an advantage because they are able to distribute their works regardless of physical distance – to older relatives in the countryside or outside the capital, to family of international graduates and potential colleagues across the globe. The online exhibition can be visited at tase.artun.ee

You can take part in the TASE ’20 art festival in the main building of EKA, in the Vent Space at Vabaduse väljak (Freedom Square), in the ARS project room and on the web. The TASE ’20 exhibition features the final theses of the Faculty of Fine Arts and the curriculum of design and applied arts, as well as the works of the faculties of design, architecture and art culture online. By the end of August, all master’s and bachelor’s theses from all departments will be added to the website at tase.artun.ee.

Triin Kerge and Aksel Haagensen’s exhibition “Where Are We Going?”, focusing on the stories of those who fled Estonia or those deported to Siberia as a child is shown in the ARS project space. The TASE FILM 2020 short film program, which will be screened in the auditorium of the Academy of Arts on August 20th at 6pm, will study the personal relationships we have with our bodies and adaptation to spaces. On Friday, Aug 21st  at 6pm, the curator Kertu Rannula invites you to the screenings of the graduation works of the animation department of EKA, Vol 2020 in the cinema “Sõprus”.

In addition to the exhibitions, the main organizer of the festival Pire Sova will organize tours in Estonian and English as part of the TASE ’20 program. The satellite program also includes works by painters from the Narva Art Residency and the Academy of Photography led by Sigrid Viir. You can also visit EKA’s Portfolio Café.

TASE ’20 will end with the legendary ERKI Fashion Show on August 29, at the Põhjala factory. This year, you are invited to a special walkthrough of fashion stages. Spectators can take part in presentations of the collections of sixteen talented young designers, each on a personal “stage”, with independent music, environment and models.
