The exhibition “Here We Are! #fomo” is creating a shifting performative process in a gallery space that is characteristic to the desire and wishful thought of being ever present in the center of the action. It carries it out by playing with different aspects and atmospheric elements mainly known to contemporary youth culture (Vice looks, live-streamings, techno music, selfie culture, expressive fashion, media scandal) or art audience (opening as the main event, big ques, exclusive afterparty, fancy drinks). Through it the wiever will find herself in a conflicting situation, where the longly waited “next big thing or soon-to-be-coolest” seems to have finally arrived to that specific moment in its awed expressive excess.
The exhibition “Here We Are! #fomo” is creating a shifting performative process in a gallery space that is characteristic to the desire of being ever present in the center of the action. The project carries it out by playing with different aspects and atmospheric elements mainly known from contemporary youth culture (Vice looks, live-streamings, techno music, selfie culture, expressive fashion, media scandal) or art audience (opening as the main event, big queues, exclusive afterparty, fancy drinks). Through it the viewer will find herself in a conflicting situation, where the long awaited “next big thing” or “soon-to-be-coolest” seems to have finally arrived to that specific moment in its awed expressive excess.
The exhibition questions the modern disease of ephemeral longing for something better through confusing the scales of “the big scene (Vienna/Berlin/where the artists are from)” with “the new small”(former East/Tallinn/where it will take place) and their exotic desires for each other’s “difference”. Vienna is as “hot” in Tallinn, as Tallinn is “hot” in Vienna. Everything is “hot” that is somewhere else. The idea of being in the “center of action” has become an impossible psychotic state, where no one is able to ever be in the “right place at the right time”. The only thing seemingly evident is the constant desire and an idea of “something better out there”. If in order to use the potential of a moment one should be actively present in that situation, then how one whose soul is always longing for “something else” ever experience or create something “big”? Has the constant fomo (fear of missing out) paralyzed the new generation’s potential? Why are we attracted to this and buy into this conflicted state? Is that we wish to arrive to our place of dreams or rather be constantly on a way for something better?
These questions and the whole abstract fomo’s nature will be put on trial by two Estonian artists Pille-Riin Jaik and Liina Pääsuke (performing the role of curators) and new generation’s promising Vienna art scene – Büsra Arli (DE), Nikolaus Eckhard (AT), Luca Fuchs (DE), Julian Inič (DE), Thekla Kaischauri(AT), Titus Probst (AT), Antony Valerian (DE) and Patrick Winkler (AT), Maitane Midby.
The opening event with various performances, DIY concerts and interventions will take place on 3rd November, 2016 in EKA Gallery, Tallinn and after the remains of the “big” will stay visible in a from of an exhibition from 4th until 26th of November.
