Abandoned Landscapes: Joaveski Paper Factory

Abandoned Landscapes: Joaveski Paper Factory

Studio Project 01.2025–05.2025

The focus of the “Abandoned Landscapes” studio of the 2024/2025 academic year spring semester was the Joaveski Paperboard Factory.

The studio focuses on the relationship between architecture and the environment, taking the historical industrial landscape and its potential in the modern environment as a starting point. This year, the students’ work focused on the former buildings of the Joaveski Paperboard Factory and the surrounding area.

The studio study began with an interdisciplinary workshop in the village of Joaveski, attended by both architecture and heritage conservation students. Based on this analysis, the architecture students began to create their own studio projects, the aim of which was to find a new spatial solution for the abandoned landscape. When creating solutions, it was important to make maximum use of the existing spatial qualities, amplify them, and logically link them with the new function.

The authors of the completed projects are the students of the AL23 course of architecture and urban design: Maria Johanna Ahtijainen, Elisabeth Ersling, Nele Lisette Hera, Heidi Jagus, Katariina Klammer, Eliis Kurvits, Lilian Källo, Lisandra Lipp, Marie Elle Melioranski, Mark Metsa, Mart Nael, Joonas Ott, Elenor Pihlak, Harriet Piirmets, Robin Pints, Elisabeth Tomingas, Oskar Toomet-Björck, Katariina Vaher, Aliis Vatku, Martin Vatku.
