The Open Lecture series of the EKA Faculty of Architecture will take place in the autumn of 2024 under the general title S*cial – Values in the built realm.
The lecturers will focus on the ongoing shift in planning practice, where considerations other than pure economic viability increasingly play a role in decision-making.
Mattias Malk, curator of the autumn lecture series, PhD student and visiting lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture, describes the main theme of the lecture series as follows:
Inclusion, the valorisation of social space and the changing role of architects, especially in the public sector, are gaining ground in Europe’s spatial development, but things are still moving slowly in Estonia. So far, our economic growth has been based on environmental degradation and, despite rigid market-driven planning, we are among the weakest in the EU in resource use. However, the foundations of a smarter spatial policy, which is more useful than profit, are still undefined and untested.
One of the aims of the lecture series is to define and rehabilitate the word ‘social’ in Estonian spatial policy, including the social responsibility mentioned in the new planned public procurement. All the invited lecturers deal with the issues of space and sociality in their daily work and will share their experiences of the changing role of architects through examples.
Already on September 5 Jonas Janke will hold the first lecture and screening “HouseEurope!”.
Unfortunately, Arno Brandlhuber will not attend the lecture due to illness.
Arno Brandlhuber and Jonas Janke are partners at the well-known b+ architecture practice, who seek to engage with the systemic challenges of our time, particularly those related to the social-ecological transformation of existing buildings, offering economically viable solutions. b+ is a highly awarded and widely known architectural practice that has been active in shaping spatial policy in Berlin and beyond. They have produced political-social films as architects, published several books and created exhibitions focusing on the promotion of a value system of architectural practice. In this lecture and screening, they will present one of their ongoing projects, HouseEurope!, which aims to change EU legislation to support renovation processes.
Jonas Janke (DE, 1991) is an architect and partner at bplus.xyz. He has a diverse background in architecture, was trained as an architectural draughtsman before pursuing his studies in Hamburg, Stockholm, and Berlin. He gained valuable experience as a tutor and assistant in various departments including design & typologies, building construction, and structural design. He was part of the team 2038, the German Pavilion at 17th Venice Architecture Biennale 2021. His focus is on new construction materials and methods for adaptive reuse and renovation projects, seeking pragmatic technical and mechanical solutions that use material and construction thoughtfully.
The lectures are intended for all disciplines, not only for students and professionals in the field of architecture.
All lectures are held on Thursdays at 6 pm in the EKA main auditorium. All lectures are in English and free of charge.
