On Freedom Square, we present the deconstructed fashion show You Have Only A Moment by Lab of Figurative Thought, followed by the announcements of the winners of the Young Artist and Young Applied Artist awards. Additionally, for the first time this year, the Young Designer Awards will be given out! Opening event continues at 19.00 at the TASE of Architecture, located in EKA!

TASE is the annual graduation show of the Estonian Academy of Arts. The exhibition presents graduation works of the Architecture, Art and Culture, Design, and Fine Arts faculties. Most works are exhibited in the Freedom Square buildings 8 and 6. The Architecture faculty’s graduation works are located at the Estonian Academy of Arts. The Graphic Design master’s works are exhibited in the yard of the Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design (open until June 11).

TRANSMISSION

the process of passing something from one person or place to another
(Oxford English Dictionary)

Last decades have brought significant changes to the consciousness. We encounter more messages and the images are ever faster. The series „Transmission“ on the other hand consists of very slow images. These are layered allover abstract paintings, which open themselves gradually and form bridges to the unconscious space of experience.

Such works are in essence a veil between dreams and the material world, inspiring connection with deeper, daily untouched inner world. Minimalist in form, from distance even monochrome meditative rectangles allow the meaning to be born only in accordance with the input from the viewer. Thereby these paintings are about the very same person that is standing in front of them, creating a personal and unique stage for their thoughts and feelings. The meaning is born when the content of the painting and the content of the viewer meet.

TASE FILM is an event which happens every year in the context of EKA’s graduate student exhibition, TASE. It offers a programme full of different videos and short films made by students of EKA.

 

TASE FILM 2022 explores the dream world and reality. The programme consists of two chapters, the first of which takes a look at socially relevant topics such as overconsumption and the tireless construction of shopping malls, and an insight into the work of food couriers. In addition, there are video pieces that look at everyday life around us. In the second part, surreal and abstract videos are presented, including documentaries of performances, dream landscapes and questions of identity.

 

The programme lasts about 2 hours.

Graduating Bachelor’s students of the Department of Graphic Design kindly welcome you to the opening of their exhibition ASTE (“A Step” in English) at the Estonian Academy of Arts, room C-304 on Friday, May 27 at 18:00.

There is a variety of projects at the exhibition, which display the ideas and interests of the young designers. There are publications, installations, visual experiments, video works, and virtual environments with which visitors can get familiar.

The graduation show takes place in the students’ usual working space, a studio, which is commonly a place run by a buzzing and chaotic atmosphere. A new surface arises at the exhibition from stacked desks – the site-specific intervention brings the works and visitors to the next level.

Prior to the exhibition, the graduating class will present their graduation projects on 26 May starting at 10:00 at EKA in room A-501. Presentations will be in English.

Young Artist Award and Young Applied Artist Award

The Young Artist Award and Young Applied Artist Award winners at the master’s and bachelor’s levels will be announced at the opening of TASE main exhibition. The prizes are each 1500€.
Young Artist Award winner at the master’s level will be chosen from Contemporary Art graduation works and at the bachelor’s level from the Graphic Art, Installation and Sculpture Painting, and Photography graduation works. The master’s prize includes a solo exhibition at the Hobusepea or Draakon gallery in 2023. This year’s jury members are art professionals Elin Kard, Marko Mäetamm, Aleksander Zahharov, Karolin Poska (only MA), Sigrid Viir and Maarin Ektermann.
Young Applied Artist Award winners will be selected from the Design and Crafts graduation works. The master level prize includes a solo exhibition at the HOP Gallery. The jury members are Maria Valdma, Ketli Tiitsar, Gregor Taul, Keiu Krikmann and Tiina Sarapu.

What should the modern library space offer its user, the 3rd year students of the EAA bachelor’s study of interior architecture ask, and offer a number of spatial concepts at the exhibition opened at the National Library until 31 August. The student projects presented at the exhibition have been created within studio “Public Space”, which was supervised by Jan Skolimowski and Hanna Karits. Public space – in the sense of buildings serving public purposes – is dealt with in the Department of Interior Architecture of EAA every autumn semester, focusing on one or another specific building.

 

This time the focus was on the Estonian National Library. The building, designed by architect Raine Karp and completed in 1993, will soon be undergoing renovation. During the course, the students researched the spatial typology of library buildings more broadly and took a closer look at the foyer and the 5th floor of the National Library, in particular. Multi-layered ideas and fresh creative spatial solutions were developed that would meet the expectations of the 21st century in the context of people’s needs, the organization itself and the surrounding Tallinn city. The focus was on the values ​​of the existing interior, the basics of lighting and room acoustics both in theory and practice. Ideas of ​​a library as a creative residency, a small village, an active movement space, an urban jungle, a memory place, etc were born.

 

On an interior architect’s desk, a public space project takes on the meaning of a social space with a physical dimension and a social content. In today’s urban and cultural landscape adapted for consumption, it is critical to relate to spaces on a daily basis that do not require opening one’s wallet. How has the public space changed in the last year, when the doors of almost all public spaces were closed for quite a while? The subject of public space provides an opportunity to think big and dream openly when studying the interior architecture of EAA. The content of the professional studio is to delve into different spatial typologies (incl. the peculiarities of the interior architecture of a large hall) and to critically interpret their functioning in contemporary and future space-time. During the semester, students interact with one specific public building, looking for connections with the architecture of the building, the urban context and new modern users. Until the end of August, all visitors to the National Library have been invited to reflect on the results of one such semester.

The master students from the Interior Architecture and Urbanism Departments of the Estonian Academy of Arts present their projects on Ida-Virumaa’s living spaces at the White Hall of Kohtla-Järve Oil Shale Museum. The landscapes of Ida-Viru, where distinguishing between the man-made and the natural has become increasingly difficult, conceal hope. They speak of a future different from the one that was planned in the past. That difference, despite the bleak outlook, is still liveable—these are environments of adaptation where a new tale is being made. Students of urban studies and interior architecture were asked to question how various experiences of habitation could be connected to the governance of decline and strategic shrinkage of the built environment. In the beautiful interiors of the White Hall, they present installations, drawings, photos, that represent topics relating to living in declining places, such as preservation, re-wilding and enchantment of emptiness.

Portfolio Café is structured around one-on-one meetings that take place between local and international fine arts and design professionals and graduate students. Each meeting takes place about 50 minutes. During Portfolio Café sessions students introduce themselves and their work, and experts share their observations, provide recommendations ask, questions etc. After the first scheduled conversation student moves on to the next selected expert they have signed up for.
All Portfolio Café meetings are in English.

Portfolio Café is a collaborative project between the Faculty of Fine Arts and Faculty of Design.

Registration:
Portfolio Café invites all fine art and design students from the MA level to participate. The spots are limited and participants will be chosen according to the provided portfolios. The reviews are considered as part of the studies and you may receive credits for participating (3 ECTS).
