NEW DEADLINE 18.09! THE 2018 APPLIED RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS COMPETITION, DEADLINE 6 SEPTEMBER

Due to the technical problems some of the works  didn’ t make it for evaluation on time, so the competition’ s jury has decided to postpone the deadline to 18.09.2018.

Each year, the Estonian Academy of Arts Department of Research and Development, in conjunction with the Tallinn City Enterprise Department, holds an Applied Research and Development Projects Competition aimed at motivating the Academy’s members to apply to a greater extent the results of their academic and research activity in the public, business and third sectors, raise the quality of the know-how provided by the Academy to companies and the public, and to raise public awareness of the application of the Academy’s knowhow in the economy and society.

The competition will determine the work with the most outstanding economic effects with regard to generating benefits to one or more companies or institution (800-euro prize), and the work with the most outstanding potential with regard to bettering social well-being and/or the living environment (800-euro prize). In addition, a special prize of 600 euros has been instituted. It can be awarded in either category to a worthy runner-up.

The members of this year’s competition jury are Jaanus Vahesalu of the Tallinn City Enterprise Department; Maria Jäärats and Kelli Turmann from the Estonian Academy of Arts Department of Research and Development; researcher Sille Pihlak from the Faculty of Architecture; and a researcher from the Academy’s Design Faculty, Ruth-Helene Melioranski. Changes may be made to the jury members if the entries include work by any of their students.

The competition is well-suited to Academy of Arts students whose final thesis has attained applied output – where the result of the work may be commercialized or used in other organizations.

To enter a work in the competition, a completed form along with the additional materials specified on the form must be sent by email to kelli.turmann@artun.ee by 18 September 2018, the subject including the word “Competition” and the name of the author. The e-mail addresses of all who participated in the conducting the work must be included among the e-mail recipients.

Screening of EAA Student Films of 2016 and 2017. In addition, for the first time – a guest film from Baltic Film and Media School – Best Documentary” about the EAA model Natalya.

Special priced ticket – 2 Euros!

Programm

16:30 eelseanss

(Ringvaade)

17.00 – 20.00

Žürii valitud filmid

I sessioon

Natalja (13 min) – Režissöör Kadi Poll, produtsent Laura Kõrvits (BFM parim dokk!).

I TASE külalisfilm, mis räägib loo EKA modellist Nataljast.

OFF (11 min) – Kelli Gedvil

Ma olin jõudnud oma loomaprotsessis punkti, kus millegi loomiseks, oli vaja vana pind hävitada. Nii eemaldasin need vanad kihid kihtide haaval.

Reidi tee projekt – Juhan Teppart

Urbanistika magistritöö osana valminud dokfilmi. Magistritöö uurib Reidi tee projekteerimise ümber lahvatanud konflikti, selle erinevaid osapooli ja mõju teeprojekti menetlemisele. Dokfilm on kokku lõigatud magistritöö raames läbiviidud intervjuudest ja toob välja võtmeisikute rollid ja eri osapoolte vastandlikud seisukohad ja Tallinna linnaplaneerimise murekohad.

Kokku kestvus 56:25 min

II sessioon

Freedog Trippo Priidik (7 min) – Vello Lutter

Käesoleva aasta alguses toimus EKA graafilise disaini II kuruse tudengite eksperimentaalsete lühidokumentaalfilmide workshop “14 karakterit”.

Kokku kestvus 39 min

A man spent most of his life in a prison. His body fully covered with tattoos, which says plenty about his criminal past and high authority status. But at one point, the time came to leave the prison… Would it be easy for the inmate to leave his Zone – comfort zone?

A bored cow tries to find some means of self expression. Some visiting clowns offer a

Sand animation about three people and one fox. How obsession pulls, friend refuses to let go and how hard it is to forget. It’s a story of a situation so muddy it’s difficult to come out of it in tact. The wicked fox can’t help even if she really wants to.

Teele Strauss

Ükskord igavuse väljadel / Once in the Fields of Boredom

Segatehnika / mixed media

6’

My short animation „Once in the Fields of Boredom“ is a short story about a couple whose life together has come to an end – they struggle with boredom.

The movie starts with a supper, which is obviously dull and intolerable for both of them, especially for the Women. When there is an interruption with the flow and the Man shifts his attention to the possible interloper, the Woman disappears. As there is still some feelings and curiosity left, the Man starts to look for the Woman. He finds her after interrupting her supper with a new companion and realizes his defeat.

This story is technically a mixture of frame-by-frame animation projected on the forest. There is a shift in the design of the characters and the real forest. With this technique I wanted to emphasize their acting and the importance of the choices they make.

Katarina Skott

Esimesest silmapilgust / At First Sight

Kuivpastellis joonisfilm / drawn film with pastels

4’16”

“At First Sight” is a story about hope in blind love. When living in a world that sees no value in you, will somebody else set their sights on it instead?

Leore Klyszejko

Põdra Maja / Moose House

Põdral maja metsa sees, väiksest aknast välja vaatab.

There’s a moose in the forest, he has a house with tiny windows.

Liisi Grünberg

Muki ja Kalju seiklus surnuaial / Muki and Kalju have a Graveyard Adventure

Digitaalne kollaaž vesivärvist ja pastapliiatsist / digital collage of water colour paint and ball-point pen

3’21”

Muki and Kalju know what can be done with the water in the graveyard well. Their ritual frees spirits hidden in the ground. Such consciousness can do nothing but repeat an action. There are things that tick, some that flow and others that just strike poses. The audiovisual world in this musical animation is trying to convey the pleasure in watching movement.

Some visiting clowns offer a

tempting glimpse of chaos. A farmer tries to keep control of the situation, seeing this spread

of chaos as a kind of plague which he must put a stop to. But the seeds of chaos are planted

deeply and cannot be eradicated completely.

Sand animation about three people and one fox. How obsession pulls, friend refuses to let go and how hard it is to forget. It’s a story of a situation so muddy it’s difficult to come out of it in tact. The wicked fox can’t help even if she really wants to.

Muki ja Kalju seiklus surnuaial / Muki and Kalju have a Graveyard Adventure

SISU Symposium of Interior Architecture and Spatial Use 2017 “Naked Space”
7. – 8. 06. Luzern, Neubad, Switzerland and Mobile Classroom of the EAA Dept of Interior Architecture, in Tallinn

The SISU 2017 symposium will focus on re-use of interior space and community-driven redesign processes. The symposium will shed light on the question, how interior architecture is able to create an identity for naked space while ‘re-dressing’ it, and how this can contribute new value to the whole neighbourhood. What are our needs today and how does it influence the re-purposing process? How can we investigate the space inside the buildings of the past?

SISU will approach these questions across different disciplines including interior architects/designers, architects, filmmakers, academics and students from different cultures for the first time in parallel in Switzerland and in Estonia.

The Estonian Association of Interior Architects, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Art / School of Engineering and Architecture, the Estonian Academy of Arts / Department of Interior Architecture and the Association of Swiss Interior Architects have the honour of inviting You to the 4th International Interior Architecture Symposium SISU

OGH “Zones of Indistinction” at EKA Gallery 9.03.–01.04.2017

zoi_horizontal

Zones of Indistinction is one possible manifestation of a broader, lived project by OGH. What is presented are the residues of an ongoing attempt to live according to the Rule in such a manner that life becomes indistinguishable from that Rule. The impetus for this rigid adherence is not a masochistic desire for structure or constraint, but – somewhat paradoxically – liberation from an imposed order. The project has been influenced by ideas like Hakim Bey’s Temporary Autonomous Zone, folk-political programs of resistance, but also Greco-Roman and Neoplatonic Christian asceticism.

For its exhibition at EKA Galerii, OGH will present a series of tools, appendages, instruments, and techniques which facilitate this proposal as well as residues from its ongoing efforts to embody it.

OGH is Paige Früchtnicht and Greg Ponchak.

Paige Früchtnicht (b. 1994) is an artist, writer and curator from Columbus, Ohio, USA, currently living in Amsterdam.

Greg Ponchak (b. 1991) is an artist, designer, and curator from Cleveland, Ohio, USA, currently living in Amsterdam. For the past three years, he has co-operatively run Skylab Gallery in Columbus, Ohio, USA.

The exhibition is open until 1 April.

The artists would like to thank their families, the Skylab family, Matthew Flegle, Michael Hemery and militarised Seattle police.

EKA Galerii is located in Vabaduse Väljak 6/8 (entrance through the inner courtyard of Tallinn Art Hall) and is open Tue–Sat, 12–18.
