Monika Žaltauskaitė Grašienė-Žaltė Lecture: 13th Kaunas Biennial „Once Upon Another Time” – Review and Case Analysis

Kaunas Biennial organizer, border member Monika Žaltauskaitė Grašienė-Žaltė will present an review of the 13th Kaunas Biennial “Once Upon Another Time… gyveno jie jau kitaip” which reflects on current global situations by exploring stories of human resilience and adaptation. The exhibition investigates myths and fictions associated with transformation, as well as lived personal and communal tales of survival.The sharing of stories enables humans to connect with each other. Stories convey multiple meanings and perspectives rooted in diverse worldviews and can also link the present to the past, as well as to the future.

The lectur is open to everyone.

Artist,  Assoc. Prof. VAA Kaunas Faculty Monika Žaltauskaitė Grašienė Žaltė will introduce Textile Department student works and  herself as an artist of the jacquard weaving technology in the context of contemporary art field: the technical one (knowledge how to do this) and the conceptual one (using possibilities providedby the technique to create the desired effect of the work). 

“Textiles have an incredible ability to be alive. What I mean by this is how it communicates a sense of substance, which is intimate to every human being. A fabric can hold both physical (heat, cold, protection) and rational (recall, memory) features. Each of us uses textile everyday in one way or another. Therefore, it is a common material that allows us to combine multiple experiences, collaborations and to understand the individual person.” 

The lectur is open to everyone.

Just as the warp threads connect the weft, serving as a bridge for each other, this exhibition by the Department of Textile Design invites audiences to ponder the role of textile in today’s and future society. At the exhibition, the department presents contemporary trends that often straddle or meld with the boundaries of other disciplines. That in turn creates a new, multidisciplinary approach where textile can take very different forms: it can convey structure, idea, protest, message, self-expression, pattern or simply colour combination.

The exhibition presents works by students and teaching staff of the Estonian Academy of Arts that investigate the all-encompassing role of textile design. Besides conventional roles, new hybrid forms emerge, presenting new knowledge in the context of artistic research. Emerging technological approaches are demonstrated, in which textile, interwoven with digital properties or technology at different levels, mediates collaborative processes in design of social interaction.

‘Folding as a Language of Design’

The presentation will describe how folding is used by designers and how it can play an important role in our sustainable future.

“All designers fold. That is, all designers fold, crease, bend, pleat, wrinkle, drape, twist and knot flat, 2-D materials to create 3-D forms. This process of transformation from 2-D to 3-D is one of the most fundamental and common languages of design, yet it is also one of the least understood.” P.J.

Paul Jackson has been a professional paper artist, designer writer and educator for almost 40-years.  He has been a folding consultant for Nike, Disney, Tetra Pak and many other companies, taught folding as a language of design in 80 Schools of Design in 11 countries, written more than 40 books and exhibited his artworks worldwide.  He says, ‘It’s a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it.’

The Tartu Art Museum is pleased to present the solo exhibition “Verbarium” by Krista Leesi. Visitors will be greeted by a world of patterns inspired mainly by Tartu but also by Paris and Tallinn. As the title suggests, the author uses nuanced wordplay to offer new interpretations to the Leaning Building of Barclay de Tolly, where the museum is located, the two-storey sheds, or “kallerei”, that are so characteristic of the city, the graffiti covered traffic signs of Tartu and Paris and other elements from urban environments.

Krista Leesi (b 1966) is an Estonian textile artist and designer and associate professor at the Estonian Academy of Arts’ Textile department, whose oeuvre is characterised by a clever conceptual union of language and visuals. Leesi’s interventions offer new and pointed meanings to familiar objects, images and environments. She finds an original way to join together the historical methods and practices of textile art, different materials and contemporary ideas. Her works lead the viewer to discover hidden meanings, to create connections between various narratives and to indulge in playful contemplations.

The technically adept execution and striking design language of Leesi’s oeuvre offer aesthetic experiences and practical aspects in parallel with gripping content. This is a magnificent example of the way the boundaries between design and contemporary art have become vague.  Leesi’s works are made unique by the fact that both art and design are equally important: they are highlighted successfully and with intensity.

Krista Leesi’s exhibition joins together two directions that are important to the Tartu Art Museum: exhibiting significant contemporary authors and presenting notable examples of design and applied arts to the public in southern Estonia. It is made even more noteworthy by Leesi’s skill and interest in approaching the exhibition with location-specific ideas, by joining Tartu to the wider context of her oeuvre and thereby adding it to her “world map”.

“Meanwhile” is an online art exhibition presented by the 3rd year students of the Estonian Academy of Arts Textile Design and Accessory Design departments. 

Material-sensitive artists focus on personal and universal observations on the topic of recycling and waste management. The effects of the pandemic and isolation can be clearly perceived in many artworks but the exhibition, established during spring, displays a sense of awakening at the same time – highlighting topics that have been overshadowed by global events of the recent times. The exhibition offers a smooth camera flight through the exhibition landscape, where artificial and natural motifs are fused into a new landscape open for critical reflection.

“Meanwhile” appears as a phantom exhibition, established somewhere in a physical space that remains inaccessible to everyone and can only be experienced from a distance.

Design & Crafts is an interdisciplinary Master’s programme at the Estonian Academy of Arts. The students enter a common programme but also select a discipline: ceramics, glass, jewellery and blacksmithing, textile design, accessory design or fashion design.

It is time to seek out the brightest ideas, because ERKI Fashion Show 2020 is on its way. Estonian Academy of Arts once again presents the biggest fashion event in Estonia, which is a platform for young fashion designers. It helps to encourage young people to present their unique creations to the public. ERKI is hoping to see creative and aspiring young people with crazy and enormously ambitious designs.

Estonian Academy of Arts announces the design competition for ERKI Fashion Show 2020. The collection can have more than one author and everyone can participate if they have graduated from high school and are currently registered in a university, vocational school or college. The ERKI Fashion Show regulation also allows to apply if studies have been completed less than 3 years ago.

The closing date for the competition is March 16, 2020. Those who were selected for the fashion show will be contacted within the following week, not later than on March 23, 2020.

ERKI Fashion Show 2020 will take place on May 23 and the competition for submitting designs begins today, December 9. Designs must be submitted to the guard desk in the lobby of Estonian Academy of Arts or mailed to the address Põhja Puiestee 7. The closing date for the competition is 16 March at 19:00.

Roots of the ERKI Moeshow go back to the early 1980s, when art students organized first theatrical fashion show to shock the audience.

Since then the event has continuously grown, being today a jumping-board for future Estonian fashion creators and also bringing each year to the podium some guest designers from abroad. Our goals are to invest into Estonian talent and its reaching international arena and also with our passionate activities to develop specific fields and society as a whole.

May 20th at 16:00 at EKA room A501 Hélène Day Fraser will give an open lecture “Decoloniality? Locating Inadvertent Parallels”.

The Associate Dean at Emily Carr University of Art and Design will share work done with many others on a project called clothing(s) as Conversation. She will speak to material practice in relation to the social and questions she is currently posing of her own work in relation to decoloniality.

She asks how do we locate ourselves? What does it mean to find new routes forward? What are the tropes that trap us? Is it possible to identify, reroute, delink, move away from mainstream assumptions of design/in design?

Hélène Day Fraser is a first generation Canadian, of Welsh and English descent, born in North-Eastern Quebec. She has been formed by life in a small town on the Canadian Prairies, an island in the Philippines, downtown Toronto, Strasbourg, the outskirts of Paris, France and most recently Vancouver and the North Shore. She is the Associate Dean, Master of Design, Jake Kerr Faculty of Graduate Studies, Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

Hélène was the Principle Investigator of a SSHRC Insight funded research initiative: cloTHING(s) as Conversation. ( 2013 – 2018). Recently, she received CFI funding to help support and develop a Textile Adaptation Research Program (TARP) based out of Emily Carr University. She is also a founding member and Co-Director of the ECU Material Matters research center, and an active member of Emily Carr’s DESIS lab (DESIS is an international design research network for sustainability and social innovation). In her role as Emily Carr University’s Academic Co-ordinator for Sustainability (2012 – 2015) she established Creatives with Intent, a group that promoted agency and communication pertaining to sustainability.

Hélène’s textile and garment-based research addresses concerns and developments in the areas of: sustainability, new digital technologies, craft and legacy practices of making and generative systems. Her work explores modes of social engagement, identity construction and clothing consumption habits.

It is informed by a design education, and a past professional career in fashion, design, and manufacturing. Day Fraser holds a Masters of Applied Arts in Design and a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Fashion.
